The Home Office

The Home Office is a United Kingdom government department, responsible for internal affairs, such as law and order throughout England and Wales and for immigration and citizenship for the whole United Kingdom. In 2007 the Home Office was split into two, with a new Ministry of Justice being formed.

The minister in charge of the Home Office is the Home Secretary.

The current Home Secretary is Jacqui Smith.

On the 23rd May 2006 then Home Secretary John Reid told a House of Commons Select Committee that his own department’s immigration system was “not fit for purpose”.
