Majority oppose ID cards - and strong opposition growing

Today’s Guardian brings news of the latest poll asking the public for their views on ID cards. Overall, the public oppose them by 50% - 47%, which continues the recent trend of polls showing a majority against. (Looking at the state of the Home Office, would you trust the government to run ID cards successfully or sensibly?)

The proportion of people who strongly oppose ID cards has grown noticeably - from 17% to 25%, whilst only 12% strongly support them.

For more details, see The Guardian website, but don’t forget also, if you haven’t yet, to pop over to the Liberal Democrat ID cards petition and add your name.

I am reminded of Peter Hains comment before the last election when he described the ID Card scheme as “This sensible and highly popular measure”

Words, coming back, bum and bite come to mind.

Its good to see a little life in this blog, but please tell us if this is just a nervous twitch or will it really live? The announcement of the delay to 2012 of the bulk issue of ID Cards went unnoticed, as did the simultaneous withdrawal of two of the NIS pre-qualified bidders. Then what about the announcement that security industry employees (bouncers, etc) will be issued with ID Cards next year?

We had a bit of a pause during the leadership election and subsequent reshuffle but yes - this site is now getting up to speed once more.

    Congratulations!
Can we have an analysis of the document revealed by NO2ID (National Identity Scheme: Options Analysis - Outcome) and Guido? Is it real? It certainly contradicts the end 2006 change from ID Card project to NIS, Notably the contributors to it don’t include DWP, yet at end 06 it was stated that they have a major role in building the NIR - the NI database and the passport database are to be the two sources of data, instead of re-registering everybody.
