Home Office faces staffing crisis
Posted on Sunday, October 29th, 2006 by Home Office WatchCategory: Departmental Administration
Core Home Office directorates are struggling with massive vacancy problems, with nearly 2,500 jobs unfilled. The Probation Service needs another 977 officers to get up to full strength - that means one in twenty probation posts is vacant, jeopardising attempts to improve community supervision of offenders. Prisons are also short of staff despite massive and unprecedented overcrowding to deal with - they are in need of another 874 prison officers. And the Immigration and Nationality Directorate, rocked by scandals over the past six months, is massively shortstaffed too, with around 400 posts unfilled.
