Vote now: who will be the next Home Secretary?

As you’ll no doubt be aware, Dr John Reid has announced that he won’t be hanging around for the inevitable Cabinet table musical chairs that will follow Gordon Brown’s leap into Number 10 - this barely over a year after Dr Reid told the Daily Mirror that he would be working “18 hours a day” to sort out the Home Office (unsurprisingly, we don’t think it’s sorted out yet).

Consequently, there’s going to be a Reid-shaped hole in the Cabinet and the troubled department will be getting another new broom. But who?

Will it be Brown’s friend and fellow Scot Alistair Darling? Will this Government’s first Home Secretary, Jack Straw, be rewarded for managing Gordon’s leadership campaign with a return to his old job? Could a strong second place in the deputy leadership contest put Hain, Benn, Blears, Harman or Johnson behind the big desk at Marsham Street? (We confess to discounting Cruddas.)

We’re big fans of democracy, so we’re leaving it up to you. (Not the appointment itself - that’s still up to Gordo.) We’ve selected ten possible replacements for Dr Reid - who do you think it’ll be?

    Missing option - Gordon Brown.

Surely he will want to control ALL governement departments himself…

  2. Graham Sowter Says:

I voted on the basis of who I think should be the next Home Secretary (John Denham) not who I fear will be ( the apparatchik Jack Straw). Just felt the need to make that clear!

  3. Colin Says:

It’s a shame Gordo’s choice is restricted to current MPs from his own party.

Continuing the great libertarian traditions of Blunkett, Clarke and Reid may be too great a task for such a small pool of candidates.

Can’t we open up the poll to include Attila the Hun, Augusto Pinochet, Robert Mugabe and Boris Johnson?

  4. simon forrester Says:

this really is turning into a complete shambles that only labour could provide.
To me the only worth while and credible person for the job,is jack straw and we all know mess he made last time.

  5. Edmund Says:

If Brown could, i’m sure he would choose Ed Balls- keep it in the Treasury!!!!

  6. Martin Bayliss Says:

How about Sven Goran Erricson at least we’d save some money for the FA, and he is an expert at dealing with a load of underperforming prima donna’s (see any home office press release).

  7. Adam, England Says:

Probably McNulty. Labour Home secretaries tend to be northern blokes who can give tough talk infront of the cameras and make people believe they mean it.

  8. James Says:

Can’t help but feel Straw would be the most liberal of the bunch.

Well, certainly more liberal than his recent successors. Still, would not have believed 5 years ago he’d be the most easygoing of the lot…

  9. Simon Davies Says:

Hopefully not one of your shower of shite!

  10. Peter Hargreaves Says:

I am personally utterly fed up of autocratic Home Secretaries. Would really have liked a tick - “None of the above.” John Denham at least appears to have some idea of what civil liberty is actually about and is perhaps the best of a bad bunch.

  11. Liz Shepherd Says:

Although we can bemoan all Home Secretaries in the past I don’t envy anyone taking on the task. At this time in our history it needs someone who is down to earth, logical & makes realistic decisions on what the country & the people need, not what the fringes or sceptics demand. All parties need to work together with whoever is selected

    Jacqui who?!

Any one got any thoughts on what she will bring to the post?
